YouTube Will Make Twice as Much Original Programming in 2020
YouTube is just getting started.
The online video platform has announced that it will double its original programming in 2020, according to AdWeek. Building on its decision last May to bring original content out from behind a paywall, YouTube will continue to offer both ad-supported and ad-free subscription options.
“We are really pleased with this new direction and for what it means for our fans and for our business,” said Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original content, appearing at the annual TV Critics Association winter press tour.
YouTube Originals is currently developing over 100 new original projects (twice as many as last year). Although YouTube has some scripted projects, it’s making the biggest push in the nonfiction/documentary space. Here are some of its upcoming projects for 2020:
The Age of AI – an eight-episode science series hosted by Robert Downey, Jr that profiles scientists and explores myths surrounding artifical intelligence. It’s already available:
Seasons – a docuseries about Justin Bieber premiered January 27 at 12 p.m. ET with new episodes launching each Monday and Wednesday at noon ET.
Creators for Change – a four-part series exploring teen girl education around the globe. Former First Lady Michelle Obama appears in its first episode.
Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert – a documentary celebrating two decades of the legendary music festival. It will feature exclusive footage and interviews, plus performances from Billie Eilish, Kanye West, Daft Punk, Travis Scott, LCD Soundsystem, Radiohead and more. Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert will premiere March 31st as YouTube livestreams the event.
This is Paris – a documentary following heiress Paris Hilton, who grew to fame when she starred in the early 2000s reality show The Simple Life. “I’ve never done anything like this in my life,” Paris, now 38, said in a recent interview. “In this film I discuss things I’ve never discussed before. I hope that people are going to see who I truly am.”
YouTube Originals also has plans for livestream specials featuring magician David Blaine and makeup influencer James Charles.
